Has Kevin Smith grown up??

I am sure most of you out there are familiar with Kevin Smith's Dogma, and know it for it's Buddy Christ, shit demons, fart jokes and of course Jay and Silent Bob. But even with all these, still has very clever concepts to wrap your head around. Without saying, Dogma is a very clever and a visually pleasing film that keeps the audience interested. But you can't help and admit it has childish tones of humour to it (some would say cheap laughs.) But then 12 Years later....Kevin Smith brought to our cinema's Red State, his new take on a religiously based film. For those of you that don't know the plot to Red State here it is very briefly, 3 boys set out to have sex with an older women one of them spoke to on the internet. Although things don't go to plan when she turns out to be part of a extreme, Christian- hate Cult. This is (As far as I know) Kevin Smith's first ever film that for one isn't based in New Jersey and is an Action, Horror. I my opinion he pulls it off, it keeps you in suspense through out, it has twists, lots of guns and some blood. This film is dark, action packed ( something he swore he wasn't good at hence turning down Directing Green Hornet.) and has no over the top comedy. The actor's in it are well cast and do a really good job, minus the lead played by Kyle Gallner which you may recognised from films such as the new Nightmare on Elm Street and Jennifer's Body. His performance was very bland and inexpressive, he just wasn't believable considering the situation he is in. But apart from that the film was in my opinion one of Kevin Smith's best movies in a long time. Although I miss the stupid jokes and of course Jay and Silent Bob, which everyone are so used to seeing in a movie by Kevin Smith, it is a nice change to see him been more grown up with his projects and trying out new genre's besides romance and comedy. I will be looking forward to seeing him working with new actor's and actresses and coming up with new concepts in the future. So I think it is safe to say, I think that for now Kevin Smith has officially grown up and is looking for new directions. But that is not to say they he wont go back to the things that he used to do.
